Installing the Oracle VM VirtualBox 5.1.14 on Windows 7 Professional Service Pack 1 (CurrentBuild 7601)

1. Download the Oracle VM VirtualBox 5.1.14 for Windows hosts using this link to your Downloads folder. You can also go here and click on the Windows hosts link:

2. Double left-click on the executable called VirtualBox-5.1.14-112924-Win.exe.


3. Left-click "Run"


4. You'll see the "Welcome to the Oracle VM VirtualBox 5.1.14 Setup Wizard." Left-click on the Next > button. 


5. At the next screen, the Customer Setup screen left-click on the Next > button.





All the features will be installed by default. You can double-check by clicking on the VirtualBox Application, selecting "Entire feature will be installed on local hard drive" and noting that the text on the right hand side still says, "It has 3 of 3 subfeatures selected." 



6. Next, you'll see a screen that allows you to instruct the installer to:

  • Create start menu entries,

  • A shortcut on the desktop,

  • A shortcut in the Quick Launch Bar and to

  • Register file associations.

All of the options should be checked. Left-click the Next > button. 




7. The next screen will warn you that your network will be temporarily disconnected. Left-click the Yes button to proceed.



8. Left-click Install button on the final screen.


9. During installation, a User Account Control Screen will check if you really intend on installing the program. Left-click yes.


10. Select Always trust software from "Oracle Corporation" and left-click the Install button to install the Oracle Corporations Universal Serial Bus driver.


11. Check the box to Start VirtualBox 5.1.14.



12. Oracle VirtualBox Version 5.1.14 is now running on Windows 7 SP1.

1. What does released under the terms of the GPL version 2 mean?


The GNU General Public License version 2 (GPLv2), referred to above as GPL version 2, is described here. Quoting directly:


The licenses for most software are designed to take away your freedom to share and change it. By contrast, the GNU General Public License is intended to guarantee your freedom to share and change free software--to make sure the software is free for all its users. This General Public License applies to most of the Free Software Foundation's software and to any other program whose authors commit to using it.


The 3rd Term and Condition states:


3. You may copy and distribute the Program (or a work based on it, under Section 2) in object code or executable form under the terms of Sections 1 and 2 above provided that you also do one of the following:


a) Accompany it with the complete corresponding machine-readable source code, which must be distributed under the terms of Sections 1 and 2 above on a medium customarily used for software interchange; or,

The source code for a work means the preferred form of the work for making modifications to it. ​For guest code in ring 0, VirtualBox employs a nasty trick: it actually reconfigures the guest so that its ring-0 code is run in ring 1 instead (which is normally not used in x86 operating systems). As a result, when guest ring-0 code (actually running in ring 1) such as a guest device driver attempts to write to an I/O register or execute a privileged instruction, the VirtualBox hypervisor in "real" ring 0 can take over.
